Building the Circular Fashion Movement: Take the Circular Fashion Pledge
By Adam Siegel, Founder, 2020 Circular Fashion Pledge; intro by Fashion Revolution USA
The Fashion Revolution movement is about bringing companies, brands, retailers and citizens together to build a better fashion industry on a global scale. That is why we support the efforts of the 2020 Circular Fashion Pledge to encourage more small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in the textile and apparel supply chain to band together to take incremental steps toward circularity. The three actions outlined in the Pledge are only the beginning; by signing onto it, participants will be able to demonstrate that the goals set are attainable, encouraging more brands to commit to them along the way. We believe this roadmap is achievable and will help to mobilize the fashion industry away from waste and closer to circularity. We hope you will support the movement and commit!
The 2020 Circular Fashion Pledge launched during Fashion Revolution Week – and just after the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day – with over 60 fashion brands from six continents committing to implement more sustainable business practices this year. Already, it has now grown to nearly 90 committed brands, just two weeks later.
Collectively, those brands recognize fashion’s significant contribution to climate change, toxic waterways and ocean pollutants, land use, and more. They know that the culture of low-cost, short-lasting clothing is contributing to tremendous waste all along the supply chain – and in consumers’ closets. And they are on a mission to change the industry; to prove that the sustainable fashion movement is still strong even in the middle of the human tragedy of COVID-19.
The Pledge was launched to prove that dynamic and innovative, small- and medium-sized fashion brands can step up to improve the industry’s impacts. Specifically, fashion brands can pledge their commitment to at least one of the three below circular actions:
The Pledge will provide signatories with resources, guidance, connections, and support to help them achieve their commitment. The full list of Brand Signatories can be found on the Pledge’s website, and other brands are welcome to join.
If you are a service provider or consumer who is interested in circular fashion? Voice your support on the Pledge’s website as well.
