What is Fashion Revolution Week?

Every year in April we run a global campaign, executed by our Country Coordinators, their teams and our Country Offices and their teams, as well as by thousands of individuals and other partners who join in using our open source materials. Our annual campaign is centred around the question Who made my clothes? The week itself always coincides with the anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, where 1,138 people were killed and many more injured, on 24th April 2013.

FASHION REVOLUTION WEEK 2022

For 2022 the Fashion Revolution Week campaign’s key message is

Money Fashion Power

The mainstream fashion industry is built upon the exploitation of labour and natural resources. Wealth and power are concentrated in the hands of a few, and growth and profit are rewarded above all else. Big brands and retailers produce too much too fast, and manipulate us into a toxic cycle of overconsumption. Meanwhile, the majority of people that make our clothes are not paid enough to meet their basic needs, and already feel the impacts of the climate crisis – which the fashion industry fuels. As global citizens, we all have the power to take action.

This Fashion Revolution Week, join us in reimagining a just and equitable fashion system for people and the planet.

The resources below have been created to support our global network to plan and create campaign activities for Fashion Revolution Week 2022. We will continue to add to these sections as we build up resources, guidelines and content for FRW 2022.

CAMPAIGN ACTIVITIES & CALLS TO ACTION

Activity planning follows the structure: Be Curious, Find Out, Do Something

Campaign Objective #1

Be Curious: Does the person who made your clothes deserve a living wage?

Find Out: There is no sustainable fashion without equal pay

Throughout the pandemic, fashion brands have made billions, while the majority of workers in their supply chains remain trapped in poverty. To address this, we are calling for new laws that require businesses to conduct due diligence on living wages. This will transform the lives and livelihoods of the people that make our clothes, and help redistribute money and power in the global fashion industry.

We need to show the reality of worker’s lives. Content under this theme will work to create empathy and understanding by sharing positive and negative case studies. It will include revisiting existing content such as Garment Worker Diaries, case studies and Money Fashion Power zine content and also create a new interactive map showing the progress of living wage legislation.

Do Something:

  • Explore the living wage map
  • Write to a policymaker
  • Follow @goodclothesfairpay, the main channel for our European Citizens Initiative campaign for a living wage

Campaign Objective #2

Be Curious: How much did you pay for *insert fave item of clothing here* and how much is it worth?

Find Out: We need to scrutinise what it is we’re really paying for.

Currently, there is a lack of understanding and appreciation of the true cost of clothing. Price tags fail to reflect the social and environmental cost of production, while as consumers, we don’t always care for our clothes in the way we should. We need to scrutinise what it is we’re really paying for.

Throughout Fashion Revolution Week, we’ll educate and inspire our global community on the real value of what we buy and wear. We will revisit #LovedClothesLast and Fashion Love Story content and create new educational content on the value of what we wear.

Do Something:

  • Ask #WhoMadeMyClothes
  • Share your Fashion Love Story in a global challenge

Campaign Objective #3

Be Curious: What would the world look like if fashion brands restored systems instead of depleting them?

Find Out: We need brands to radically reduce their environmental impact.

We know that both people and nature are paying the price of the fashion industry’s unregulated exploitation and waste. Brands are avoiding the realities of climate breakdown by continuing to pursue extractive business models and greenwashing their way to sustainability. In 2022, we need brands to radically reduce their environmental impact by shifting their focus away from growth.

Small businesses and independent creatives around the world are already enacting these ideals; their courage and wisdom will lead the charge. We’ll be focusing on the Fashion Open Studio 2022 programme and the Small but Perfectly Formed hub and network.

Do Something:

  • Ask #WhatsInMyClothes
  • Attend a Fashion Open Studio event
  • Meet a Small but Perfectly Formed brand

CURATED PROGRAMMES

We have started to make some resources and materials which help Country Teams host specific, curated events. These are not open source because they are ‘brands’ that as Fashion Revolution we want to retain more curatorial control of and take a more active role in guiding our network. These include: We ask that you do not use the Fashion Question Time or Fashion Open Studio event title or branding without working closely with our teams and having permission to use these special event formats. You can of course host panel discussions and events in designers studios as part of your open source Fashion Revolution activities but we ask that you use a different event title if they are not organised with the Fashion Revolution team in the UK.

Fashion Question Time Event Pack

This pack is a step-by-step guide for Global Network country teams wishing to organise their own Fashion Question Time policy level discussion.
